Papkuilsfontein Main Farm
‘’Right up there with the most memorable places to stay in South Africa”. Greenwood Guides U.K., Hand picked accommodation in SA. And here are my reasons. You stay in an old stone cottage (two cottages also have outside showers), surrounded by rock, gum tree and wildlife, not another human in sight. The quality of peace and stillness defeats description. Gas-fire plumbing for baths, hurricane lamps for light – many guests have refused to come back if Willem installs electricity. One cottage is fitted with solar lighting, but this is seldom used. Then there is the small matter of the gorge and waterfall, which I would have kept secret if I wasn’t insistent on your visiting the farm. Your jaw will drop 180meters into the canyon. Take a picnic to the deep rock pools for swimming above the waterfall. Or there is a swimming pool, which was built like a farm dam typical to the area, situated between the two cottages. The wild flowers in season are sensational even by Namaqualand standards; the plant life divided between Cape Fynbos and Karoo succulent, a botanist’s dream; steenbok, klipspringer, porcupine and dassie love the terrain and have NOT been specially introduced. Alrie is an excellent cook (breakfast a string of surprises). It’s a magical place that not many know about and the van Wyks are lovely, friendly people. You should stay at least two nights. Self catering, B&B, or D, B&B. A small restaurant in the flowering season, is open to the public. A flower route is also available to the public. Papkuilsfontein is child- and eco-friendly. It is a Conservation Farm and is part of the Cedarberg Corridor. Guided farm tours under the guidance of Willem van Wyk, who has extensive knowledge of the area, can be booked Consider the beautiful route via the Botterkloof- and Pakhuis Passes (R364) from Clanwilliam to us. It is a dirt road and an alternative to the N7 route from Cape Town. One third of this road is tarred. Papkuilsfontein also is a comfortable and well-known stop-over for travellers to the Kgalagadi.
