Rooibos Heritage Route
Come and learn more about nature and culture while savouring the peace and quiet of the Suid Bokkeveld and the Cederberg Mountains: The Rooibos Heritage route stretches from Nieuwoudtville to Wupperthal.
One of the really special aspects of the Rooibos Heritage Route is that this is an authentic route – offering a different experience to the visitor: less comfort, more real life and authentic people sharing their lives and often homes. It is really a route for the traveller wanting to get in touch with the way some communities live in the area and learn about the ecology and people’s culture as they engage.
Come and enjoy the diversity of the Route, experience the culture lifestyle which will renew your outlook on life. Sleep in a ‘matjieshut’ or under the stars. Enjoying a cup of organic traditional rooibos tea and a mouthwatering slice of home made bread or ‘roosterkoek’. Learn about medicinal plants and their traditional use. Also discover this amazing reminders of past cultures, painted on the walls of caves and rock shelters which have survived over hundreds and thousands of years: The legacy of the San people.
The route is not very polished and perfect – but more a rough diamond for those that are keen to explore and engage with the cultural heritage and people’s lives today.
There is also a podcast developed for this route you can download them from the website. The podcast is organised into different sections that are numbered – and you can find stones with the numbers along the route. The respective track will then explain a feature in the landscape, tell a certain story or give some historical background.
The Route is 121 km long and requires a vehicle with reasonably high clearance and an experienced driver to navigate dirt roads. The conditions of the road are reasonable for a high clearance vehicle. The conditions of the road vary throughout the year – especially after heavy rainfall the roads can become very challenging to navigate.
It is worthwhile to mention that the rooibos Heritage Route has quite a few gates between Papkuilsfontein and the Dooring river – allowing the visitor to pause and take in the landscape. Travelling time along the route is about 3-6 hours – depending on travelling speed and breaks.
For the Rooibos Heritage Route booking ahead is essential.
